In the age of 24 hours news cycle and social media, effective stakeholder management is more important than ever. Effective identification, understanding and management of your stakeholders, their triggers and their expectations will improve your ability to reduce risk, tailor mitigation measures and deliver a successful project.

The influence of stakeholders on your project can be immense, and if not managed correctly, could lead to project delays, resource drain, political intervention or project termination. Having conducted a stakeholder management, you will have most of the information you need to communicate with your stakeholder. By engaging the right people in the right way, you can make a big difference to your project.

Stakeholder management is critical to the success of every project in every organization. Take the time to identify all stakeholders before starting a new project. Include those who are impacted by the project, as well as groups with the ability to impact the project. Then, begin the process of building strong relationships with each one.

To manage your stakeholders, you can start with the process of identification through a few methods such as brainstorming, mind mapping, create stakeholders list, create stakeholder category and directory. The second step is by analyzing your stakeholders and divide them based on power, urgency, legitimacy, influence, and interest.

Every stakeholder has different characteristic and role. To get information, you can start by collecting data and your stakeholder opinion from media. After identifying and analyzing the stakeholders, you can start managing and engaging your stakeholders by planning the communications approach. The goal of a successful communications approach is to manage expectations and minimize surprises. As much as possible, you are trying to manage the information that your stakeholders will get.

As a result, we can get insight about which stakeholders that will give us support, which one will act as a threat, which one is more powerful than the other, and which one that we will need to approach the most.

In order to get a deeper understanding of stakeholder management, on Friday, August 25th 2017, Muhammad Arif the Account Manager of Fortune PR presented a very detailed training about his professional consulting experiences handling stakeholder mapping projects. Participants gained insights and knowledge about stakeholders mapping and management, and why PR pros must master this knowledge.
